Nike’s latest SB Dunk Low celebrates the legacy of the Seattle Supersonics through a nostalgic colorway that captures the team’s iconic green and red palette. Though lacking official team branding, the sneaker pays homage to the defunct NBA franchise with carefully chosen design elements.
The intersection of the NBA (sports) and sneaker culture have always intertwined, and it’s moments like this that feel nostalgic to the fans (like myself).
Throughout the 1990s, the Sonics became a powerhouse, featuring iconic players such as Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton. Their electrifying “Reign Man” and “The Glove” era produced multiple playoff appearances and thrilling basketball that captivated fans nationwide. The team consistently ranked among the most exciting in the league, known for high-flying dunks and aggressive play.
However, financial disputes and ownership challenges ultimately sealed the franchise’s fate. In 2008, after 41 years in Seattle, controversial owner Clay Bennett moved the team to Oklahoma City, rebranding them as the Thunder. The relocation devastated local fans and remains a sensitive topic in Seattle sports history.
Despite their absence, the SuperSonics’ legacy endures — evident in this new colorway that Nike has concocted for their next Nike SB release.
The shoe features a color scheme reminiscent of the Sonics’ late-1990s aesthetic, incorporating green as the primary color, complemented by red and yellow accents. Nike has added thoughtful details, including a yellow Swoosh and branded elements on the tongue and heel. Sneaker enthusiasts will appreciate the additional red and yellow laces, offering styling versatility.
Dropping on December 7th through SNKRS and select retailers, this commemorative SB Dunk Low will retail for $125, providing fans a wearable piece of basketball history.
