Kendrick Lamar, Phil Jackson & “GNX”

“Punch played Phil Jackson in my early practices. Strategies on how to be great amongst the averages.” — Kendrick Lamar, “heart pt. 6,” GNX

As I’ve previously stated, Hip Hop and basketball are interconnected in more ways than one — whether through lyrics, rappers sitting courtside, or ballers who have rap careers. The two have always crossed over since the birth of Hip Hop.

Today, Los Angeles rapper, Kendrick Lamar, unexpectedly released a new album titled “GNX.” As I expected, he sprinkled a few sports references throughout his 12-track project — similar to the one I opened this particular article with.

And this isn’t the first time Kendrick has mentioned the former Los Angeles Lakers coach. Back in 2013, Kendrick and Big Sean linked up for a collaborative record titled, “Control.”

If Phil Jackson came back, still no coaching me,” rapped K. Dot.

Taking to Twitter, Jackson replied, “@kendricklamar it’s okay to be cocky and sure, but we all need someone to lean on. Let’s call it mentoring.”

Nearly 12 years later, Kendrick continues to be the epitome of all things Los Angeles, respectfully, the crossover between the Lakers and his lyrics is inevitable.
